Choice of monochrome gives rich tonality through the image, making the best of indifferent lighting. Thoughtful composition from high vantage point (bridge?), but I would prefer less of the trees as the interest is on the left of the image. The photographer wants us to be led through the frame by the canal, which works well, but the building walls aren’t vertical so look a little awkward.

I agree the removal of colour adds form to what is an overcast and wintry scene, The principal subject is the canal, so moving to your left would give an unobstructed view of it, although remove the diagonal and possibly divide the frame in two.
